“Christmas, Memories & Just Taking the Photo” Episode 23: Soulful Snaps

Hello lovely souls,

I’m Joanne McCloy, and this is Soulful Snaps — a quiet space I open every Tuesday to share a moment of reflection, a glimpse behind the lens, and a little slice of my heart.

And this week… well… here we are.

Christmas Eve is knocking at the door, and goodness me — what a year 2025 has been.

It’s been one of those sit down, buckle up kind of years.
Rollercoaster stuff.

The kind that stretches you, softens you, and quietly reshapes who you are.

This Christmas feels different for me.
Different in ways that are tender.
Different in ways that ache a little.

For me, Christmas will forever be my Nan.

Christmas has always been about memories. Not perfection. Not matching outfits. Not a table that looks like a magazine spread. But memories. The ones that live in your bones.

For me, Christmas will forever be my Nan.

Her arriving a few days early.

Farm tours. Barbecues. Swimming in the pool.
Deck chairs on the concrete terrace.
Too many chips. Too much cheese and crackers.

She’d be there Christmas morning — false teeth in (eventually), nightie swapped for proper clothes, eyes sparkling as presents were opened. Then mid-morning, the matriarch would rise. Lettuce sliced impossibly fine. Potatoes peeled. Ham carved. Pavlova perfected. Christmas pudding steamed and ready.

This year is the first without her.

And here’s the thing — Christmas doesn’t stop being Christmas just because it looks different. But it does ask something of us. It asks us to choose presence over pressure. Connection over expectation. Meaning over perfection.

Which brings me to something I believe with my whole heart:

👉 Just take the photo.

Take the group photo — even if someone’s missing.

Take it even if it feels messy.

Take it even if not everyone is there.

Because one day, the whole lot of us will be missing — and you’ll wish you had the photo.

Photos don’t capture perfection.

They capture now.

They capture love, connection, and belonging — exactly as it is.

So this Christmas, create something simple.
Bake something together.
Decorate something small.

Laugh. Eat marshmallows. Take silly photos with forks and food. Sit under the tree with dessert.

And above all — be intentional.

Because the most meaningful gift you can ever give isn’t another thing…

It’s your time.
Your presence.
The sweetness of your soul.

From my heart to yours — Merry Christmas.

And thank you for spending these quiet moments with me.

With love,
Joanne
