There’s something magical about being surrounded by people who get your passion
Last week, I had the privilege of diving deep into New Zealand’s vibrant photography community at the NZIPP Conference — and it filled my creative cup to the brim.
From the first morning to the last evening, every conversation, every session, and every shared moment reminded me why I fell in love with photography in the first place.
Before the conference officially began, I witnessed the Iris Awards live judging — a two-day event where each image is projected on screen, critiqued, and scored by a panel of industry experts. It’s one thing to look at a photograph. It’s another thing entirely to hear seasoned photographers describe what they see, feel, and interpret.
I learned that before you can tell a photograph’s story, you must first truly see it — its light, lines, emotions, and unspoken messages. This way of approaching imagery has completely shifted the way I’ll view and present my own work.
The Power of Image Judging
Another key takeaway? The importance of printing your photographs.
We live in a digital age, but nothing compares to holding an image in your hands or seeing it on your wall. Printed photographs are tangible legacies — pieces of your history that can be passed down, touched, and treasured for generations.
Whether it’s a wedding album, a framed portrait, or a collection of candid family moments, photographs deserve to be lived with, not just stored on a hard drive.
Bringing Photographs Off the Screen and Into Our Homes
Of course, the highlight for me was the people.
Conferences like NZIPP are where creative sparks fly — in hallway conversations, over coffee breaks, and while listening to passionate presenters share their wisdom.
I met inspiring photographers from across the country, traded stories, swapped tips, and walked away feeling part of something much bigger than myself.
The Heart of the Conference – Connection
As a photographer, I don’t just take pictures — I capture stories. The NZIPP Conference reminded me that storytelling is a skill that must be nurtured, shared, and celebrated.
By refining how I describe, interpret, and present an image, I can better honour the people and moments I photograph.
