My “Why” Decoded – Episode 8: Soulful Snaps

Creating From Emotion, Legacy, and Connection

Hello lovely souls,

This week’s Soulful Snaps is all about gratitude—and about discovering my why.

Recently, I attended an NZIPIP conference where Netra Chetty shared an incredible workshop. She turned muddy, dirty water into something drinkable, but what she also did was help me turn years of questions and reflections into clarity.

Through her process, I was able to decode the threads of my life, and for the first time, I fully understood my creative purpose.

I realised that I didn’t “become” a creative four years ago when I started photography. I’ve always been a creative—it just took me 46 years to step fully into my truth.

✨ As a child, I was a dreamer and a world-builder.
✨ My creative superpower is storytelling through atmosphere and environment.
✨ I ground myself through water, emotion, and flow.
✨ My art is deeply emotional, fuelled by nostalgia, rhythm, and story.

Born a creative

This explains why I’m often invited to do deeply meaningful work—photographing terminally ill patients, children with cancer, angel babies, and families in fragile seasons of life. I can hold space. I can step into the emotional truth of a moment and create something timeless.

Meaningful Works

I now know why nostalgia, story, and connection fuel my creativity. The more you share your passions, your hopes, your childhood memories, your truths—the more deeply I can create. That’s how I move from “good work” to exceptional work.

Because photography isn’t just about a picture. It’s about capturing your soul in a way that says, I was here. I was seen. I was loved. I was remembered.

Why nostalgia, story, and connection fuel my creativity

This week, I’m so grateful—for the people who come into our lives, for those who shape us without even knowing, and for the gift of finding clarity in my why.

Until next Tuesday—keep noticing the beauty, hold space for the moments that matter, and remember: your story is worth telling.

With love,
Joanne
