The Magic of Transformation: Behind the Curtain with Variety Theatre
Every year, I’m gifted the chance to photograph the incredible performers of Variety Theatre — usually two productions, one in May and another in November. And while it’s about the music, the laughter, and the lights, for me it’s always been something much deeper.
When I step behind the lens at these shows, what I see isn’t just acting — it’s transformation. It’s witnessing someone surrender themselves to a role that somehow, secretly, lives deep inside who they are. It’s courage. It’s freedom. It’s authenticity.
From the young children beaming with excitement to the adults rediscovering their inner spark, every performer tells a story — not just of the show, but of themselves. Watching the shyest of souls turn into the boldest, most magnetic characters under the lights is like watching a quiet dream come alive.
What I see isn’t just acting — it’s transformation
I see dedication in every late-night rehearsal, laughter in every misstep, and a quiet strength in every line remembered. There’s an alchemy that happens — the tiredness, nerves, and self-doubt melt away, replaced by magic, connection, and joy.
And for me, photographing that? It’s pure privilege.
Because these moments remind me — we all deserve to shine. We all deserve to find the thing that lights us up from the inside, the way performing does for these amazing souls.
Whether it’s theatre, painting, music, or photography — it’s never too late to find that place where you can simply be.
