How I Capture Love, Even When Time Is Short
The Greatest Compliment I’ve Ever Received
“You just captured him perfectly. There are so many photos I just love.”
When she said those words to me, I felt something shift inside.
It wasn’t just about the photograph. It was about the person in it. The spirit, the spark, the story. Those words were the greatest compliment I could ever be given as a photographer.
Because behind every portrait is a life. A connection. A moment that might never come again.
Some families come to me knowing they’re capturing some of the last photographs they’ll have together. A parent is terminally ill. A sibling’s health is failing. And yes — it can feel heavy.
But when I show up to photograph these moments, I don’t bring the weight of what's coming. I bring light, presence, and love. I ask myself, If this were my mum, my dad, my sibling… how would I want to remember this time?
Would I want to see their quiet stare, their cheeky smile, their wacky humour?
Would I want to remember the way we laughed, the way we were simply together?
We Never Know Which Moment Will Be the Last

My job is to create space for you to just be. To set aside the fear or uncertainty and sink into the moment with your person. I read the room gently and bring the right amount of warmth and energy — sometimes laughter, sometimes stillness — so that everyone feels safe and seen.
Because when you love hard, laugh fully, and let go — the photographs come alive. They become time capsules. They become legacy.
Presence Over Perfection
I’m not afraid of death. I see it as part of the story. We all have a dash between our birth and when we leave this earth — and what we choose to do with that dash matters.
So take the photos. Make the memories.
Celebrate your people. Capture the light.
Because those images… those real, emotional, joyful frames… become the greatest gift we can leave for the ones we love most.
The Dash in Between
Thank you for spending a few quiet minutes with me here. The Soulful Snap will be back each Tuesday at 6pm — whether you’re reading or watching, I hope these small windows into my world bring a moment of pause, connection, and maybe even a little inspiration.
If something in today’s post resonated with you, I’d love to hear from you — or feel free to share it with someone who might need it too.
With love,
Joanne 🤍
Until Next Tuesday...
