A Creative Connection in the Clouds: Mickey & Michelle in the Southern Alps
Some photo sessions leave an imprint on your soul — and this was one of them.
When you cross paths with fellow creatives and feel that instant connection, you just know something magical is about to unfold. That’s exactly what happened the day I met Mickey and Michelle, an incredible harp and violin duo from Melbourne, right here amidst the majestic Southern Alps of New Zealand.
We met by what I can only call divine timing. Mickey and Michelle were on a mission — hiking the length of New Zealand along the Aurora Trail to raise funds for osteoporosis research. Like so many plans during that time, their journey was put on hold during the COVID-19 lockdowns. But in 2022, they picked up where they left off and began performing in small, soulful towns across Aotearoa, welcomed warmly by locals who helped carry their instruments, gave them beds to sleep in, and cheered them on every step of the way.
Staying with the incredible Viv Barrett, a much-loved local with a generous heart. And that’s how we found each other.
They mentioned wanting a photo shoot in the mountains — and I couldn’t have said “yes” fast enough.
Between their gigs and the mountain’s ever-changing weather, we didn’t have much flexibility. But when two passionate souls say, “Let’s do this,” you just figure it out. We headed up the Mt Hutt access road, hearts full, instruments packed, creative spirit buzzing.
At first, we were met with a complete whiteout — fog so thick it felt like we were wrapped in cotton. But instead of disappointment, we shared laughter, snacks, a cheeky drink or two, and quietly trusted the moment. We waited.
And then — it lifted.
The fog gave way to a breathtaking sunset high in the sky, golden light bathing the mountain tops. Mickey and Michelle played their instruments while I captured it all. The sound of harp strings and violin notes echoing through the peaks gave me goosebumps — the kind that stay with you.
That’s how they ended up in Methven
My job is to create space for you to just be. To set aside the fear or uncertainty and sink into the moment with your person. I read the room gently and bring the right amount of warmth and energy — sometimes laughter, sometimes stillness — so that everyone feels safe and seen.
Because when you love hard, laugh fully, and let go — the photographs come alive. They become time capsules. They become legacy.

Their words afterward meant the world to me
That shoot reminded me why I love creating for fellow artists: they lean in. They trust the process. They surrender to the moment. They bring their whole, authentic selves, and they invite you to do the same.
It was a night that almost didn’t happen — but thank goodness it did. It was a reminder that when you pour your whole heart into something, when you show up with love and intention, magic shows up too.
